We'll be there in March and hope to see you all again. Thanks to everyone who help to make each month's match a great success.

Before I sign off, here are a few words from WNYPPL Range Master Jeff Hennard:

Shooters:

I've always enjoyed ROing shooters and volunteering with match set up, administration, and
yes . . . even tear down at times. There was an issue on Stage 2 at our WNYPPL match this past weekend, however, that made for a rather unpleasant experience for me. While ROing that stage, it appeared to me that one of the shooters did not follow the proper stage procedure. I asked that shooter a specific question as to how they had shot the stage. They answered me directly and I took them at their word.

Perhaps I should not have asked the shooter the question. Perhaps I should have presented the same question instead to the ROs on the adjacent stage, or even the competitor who was my scorekeeper (and thus an RO) at the time. As the RO, I was watching the gun and though I was nearly sure that my judgment...that the shooter had not followed the proper procedure...was correct, I gave him the benefit of the doubt after he answered my question.

After all, it was a local match . . . no pressure, just good sporting fun with other shooters who enjoy each other's company as well as some friendly competition. Not long after scoring that stage for that shooter, however, I had multiple shooters, my scorekeeper, and the ROs from the stage next to mine tell me that my initial judgement was, in fact, correct . . . proper procedure had not been followed.

In fact, what the competitor had told me was, I believe, a bold-faced lie.

I am asking Jim to include this in the "A Zone" for a couple of reasons. One reason is to simply tell any of you who don't know me well that I love this sport. And as an RO and acting Range Master for the WNYPPL I try to be fair enforcing the rules.

The second reason I want this to go in the "A Zone" is because I want to make everyone aware that if a similar situation occurs . . . where I find (when acting as an RO or Range Master) that I, another RO, or any other match official has been lied to by a competitor such that it affects that competitor's scoring for a match . . . that I will disqualify that competitor from the match for Unsportsmanlike Conduct per rule 10.6.1.

Sorry for the lengthy note and some strong feelings/opinions, but thanks for "listening." I look forward to seeing you all on the range again soon.

Jeff Hennard
Acting Range Master

Until next month, Shoot safe!

Open: Match Winner Gary Schlicht
Limited: Jeff Hennard

Production: Evgueni Koulechov
Revolver: John Manzell
Single Stack: Roel Rodillas

2010 Match Director Derek Zmozynski squeezed everything but the kitchen sink into this month's match including our new Poly-Steel plates and it a very unique match indeed. Thanks to our first squad who stepped up the pace and got the match back on schedule after a short delay caused by a ventilation shut-down.

Match winner and ventilation system detective Gary Schlicht rose to the top only a few months after moving to Open Division. A few new faces were in attendance on the range and a few attended to watch and learn more and possibly participate in future matches.

Thanks to all who participated in every role - especially who set up, RO'd, kept score, taped and tore the match down, as well as our regulars who put your matches on each month.

2010 looks to be a very busy year - lots of matches are hitting the calendar. PLEASE NOTE that our June match has been rescheduled to the 20th in order to avoid a conflict with the GCL Firecracker. (Consider it the "warm-up"). Our match invitation has been udated and you will get the correct document by linking through the home page.

Gem City club in Erie Pennsylvania is planning a Level I Range Officer class tentatively for April - we'll try to advise you of the details when they're available.

Thursday practices continue with a .22 carbine fun match on February 18th. You can shoot pistol or .22 carbine or both!

Let us know when you have questions or comments - we'll see you on February 28th!

In the meantime, shoot safe!

You may have noticed that we’ve been experimenting and altering the indoor squad times to attempt to make the matches flow better and allow for the use of more interesting and longer stages. Contact Mike Harding at wnyppl@gmail.com for a January slot.

Missing this month was WNYPPL member Darren Leskiw who moved to sunny Missouri to take an engineering position with Sierra Bullets. Darren, we wish you the best! Please send a truck-full of .40, .45 and 9’s for Christmas.

We held our annual meeting on December 10th and we truly wished you were all there as the food was excellent and the company was better! Your 2010 Board of Directors is as follows:

President: Yours truly

Secretary/Treasurer: Mike Harding

Match Director: Derek Zmozynski

Safety Officer: John Manzell

Range Master: Jeff Hennard

Director At Large: Jamie McDonough

Many thanks to Ryan Dominguez for his service on the Board of Directors.

We’ve got some great ideas to spice up our 2010 matches – we ask for your help as usual and in addition, please get your match and stage ideas to Derek. The current plan is to shoot carbines again after one of our summer matches and possibly include one carbine stage each month outdoors. We also have Derek and Jamie looking at putting on a Steel stage at one of our early 2010 matches.

Dues and match fees for 2010 will remain the same.

Ask any WNYPPL member or Director how to get more involved, how to become a Range Officer, how to find out about other club's upcoming matches, how to get someone new into Practical Shooting!

At our Thursday practice sessions, we will plan to include Classifier stages, a Concealed Carry match and a .22 carbine match. Come on down, practice is good for you and we have a lot of fun. Contact me at wnyppl@wnyppl.org for more information.

As we close out another year, we thank all of you for participating in our matches and a special thanks to all who helped with every function of the club. It’s often said that this is a volunteer sport, and you are all appreciated as these matches would not happen without you.

Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy and prosperous New Year!

Shoot Safe.

Well, much like our last several matches, the sun wasn’t out, it was cold . . . and, at least it didn’t rain. Did I mention we were back on the indoor range?

Three stages tested 47 shooters who filled all possible divisions. Seniors, Super Seniors, Women and Law Enforcement types competed. Newbies and seasoned vets alike.  47 shooters is a hefty load to get through a match in our close quarters and everyone worked hard to keep things moving. The pasters were flying!

Fun in the (mostly) sun for the past two months and a little mud means that we are well into the summer season. Stages have required more movement and a more complex plan of attack. We've got a couple more matches outside, so make the most of them. We'll also have our annual carbine fun match in August. (See below).

Immediately following our August squads, you can shoot your Pistol Caliber Carbine in an informal match. Two divisions only, Tactical and Open.

A couple of serious notes. One from me and one from Secretary Mike Harding.

First: It is your responsibility to review your scoresheet (9.7.4).  Count the hits, misses and penalties yourself before you sign your scoresheet. Maybe it was spring fever, but there were many scoresheet mistakes at our May match. If there's a mistake in the results because of an error in the score sheet that you signed, it can't be fixed.

Second: The morning squad is limited to no more than 24 shooters. We only take 24 reservations for the morning and if you are registered for the afternoon and show up early, we can't "squeeze you in". If you make a reservation for a slot, we expect you to ATTEND THE MATCH. If you have a reservation and don't attend the match, that's a slot that goes empty that someone else could have used. Please email or call if you find you can't attend so someone else can use the slot.

Don't forget we practice every Thursday in the summer and you are welcome to come out and bring a friend. Thursdays attract a fun bunch of folks and we practice from 4:00 - 7:00 PM.

Next match is Sunday June 28th. Contact Mike Harding for a slot.

We appreciate the extra effort and energy plus time you spend when you work the match, whether you RO, keep score or set-up/tear down. Thanks very much.

" . . . It's been a long hard lonely winter." --George Harrison

Seems like a long time since we had a match since we cancelled January's due to ventilation shutdown caused by extreme cold temperatures. Never the less, it was good to get back together with everyone on Sunday. It sounded a little strange to hear "Happy New Year" in February.

So, Sunday's match had a peculiarity and it should be mentioned that WNYPPL's best minds (?) tried to figure out how to game stage 3,  "Two Bad". We didn't figure it out at set-up, but some did at the match. Turned out to be a lot of fun to see the shooting problem approached in so many different ways.

Your match winner, Rob Elliott bested the pack. Competition was tight in all divisions and we had several new shooters and a few faces who showed up who we had not seen in a while.

Our 2008 match finale included 43 participants and as always, hopefully all enjoyed themselves. Derek Zmozynski continued his winning ways with three stages including a classifier and a "why didn't you leave that thing in the trailer" stage with a swinging no-shoot making an otherwise mundane stage into something, ah, special . . .

The 2009 season will be upon us before we know it and the match invitation is posted on the home page of this site as well as here: 2009 WNYPPL Letter for ATF.doc

On November 13th we held our annual meeting and your WNYPPL officers were elected as follows:

President: Jim Rusert

Safety Officer: John Manzell

Secretary Treasurer: Mike Harding

Range Master: Jeff Hennard

Director: Derek Zmozynski

Director: Ryan Dominguez

Special thanks to Dave Pribek who left the board after a lengthy tenure.

Your 2009 dues have been lowered to $30.00 (US). Match fees are unchanged.

We ask that during the next year, you work at least one shift for a match. RO, keep score, come to setup or stick around to tear down and put away the gear, we need your help!

The board would also would like to know if you are not currently holding a USPSA Range Officer designation, and you would like to take the course, let me or one of the other BOD members listed above know, and we'll keep you informed when we hear of a course within a reasonable distance. This is a good way to serve the sport, learn more about the rules and"why we do it that way" and pick up a few pointers that just might help your shooting while you're at it!

Many many thanks to everyone who helped out this year. All of your help is appreciated and it should be obvious that the matches depend on your help. We'll look forward to putting on 11 more great matches in 2009 with your help.

One more thing: A CALL FOR STAGES! Please email me your stage ideas and designs to be considered for 2009 matches - indoor or outdoor, long or short, we need 'em.

Have a terrific holiday season and we hope to see you in January.

At the end of our outdoor season, Forty-four hardy competitors took on five stages with the overall outcome topped by Open Division shooter Derek Zmozynski. All divisions had tight races and we were once again visited by Rochester Shooters Mike Cole and Jeff Curts, in a warm-up for the World IPSC Championship. I understand that Mike Nicolaidis and Robbin Hudson were heading to Bali as well. I'm guessing a few others were making the big 27 hour trip to Indonesia. We wish you all good luck!

Welcome new shooter Dave College who attended and was in "learn the game" mode. Jim Wheeler visited from Northern Virgina as did Jeff Harmon from the Washington DC area!

Well, I wasn't there, so I can't comment on the weather, but I understand it was great! Match Director Derek Zmozynski envisioned and supervised the match and having done that, all that was left was to win the match, and he did. (No truth to the rumor that he had the match set up in his backyard for the last few months).

New attendees from up north included Antonio Alabado and his son Jaime. We also had an impressive contingent from the Rochester area: Bob Urban, Paul Roberts, Paul Goodman, Don Wester and John Marcaida. Welcome all!

Other than SS, all of the divisions were pretty well filled out and the competition was tight! In addition, a couple of our newer members picked up their first plaques, namely Dan Hamels and Ryan "Quiet Man" Dominguez. Congratulations!

More on carbines below.

On the pistol side, Derek kept his streak alive among some stiff competition in a very well attended match. There was a little bit of everything in this match: Steel, Speed Shoots, A Tacti-cool field course, a bendy-down start shoot 'em up port/door/barrel shoot, (?) and a couple of newer shooters among the seasoned veterans. Many thanks to this month's Match Director, Jeff Hennard and also to all who helped put this very succesful match together. August's event promises to be more fun, so bring a friend!

Thanks very much to all who contributed time and effort. I appreciate all of your hard work.

Safety Note: We'll be closing the road down to the range whenever there are active squads. During the match, you'll need to walk down the middle of the range and over the big steel box. We're sorry for any inconvenience, we just want to keep everyone out of the "180" and splatter from the south side of the range.

As I began to write here, I received the sad news of Larry Dumond's sudden passing. Larry was a stalwart member of the club for years before I came around and always had a pleasant word for you, was willing to help with the match or advise a new shooter, and had a terrific sense of humor. He will be missed.

Sunday's match took place in bright sunshine, on solid ground and was fun for all. Derek Zmozynski solved the courses of fire with the greatest accuracy and speed and took top honors. The closest race took place in Limited 10 where the Rochester based Jeff Jacklin was edged out by Alex Szakacs.

Back to the outdoor range means jacketed ammo, steel, movers, and the infamous Texas Star. Oh, maybe some mud and don’t forget the sunscreen. We also change to just two squads, 9:30 AM and 12:00 PM. Contact Mike Harding for a slot: wnyppl@gmail.com.

Many, many thanks to all who helped out, Mike Harding, Gary Schlict, Dave Pribek, John Manzell, Ryan Dominguez, Jeff Hennard, Derek Zmozynski, Allen Nelson, Sean Fallon and Darren Leskiw. I may have missed someone, if so, I’m sorry. Let me know . . .

We'll move our gear outside over the next week or so and you're welcome to attend practice any Thursday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 or so. Bring a friend!

Dear 12:15 PM Squad,

Sorry we ran late. We think it's because everyone was having so much fun and the time just flew by.

The March WNYPPL match was supported and helped along by a great many of you who are reading this. Many thanks to all.

Those tarps can be treacherous! Several scientifically situated big blue tarps hung on today's long stage which provided quite a bit of discussion and varying opinions on how best to handle the plan, right to left or left to right, reload here or there or just hope you remembered where everything was; because in many cases, everything changes at the buzzer. The other stages were shorter, but the "three on each target" stages seem to get to a lot of us. Funny how that works.

Combined Results Here:  http://wnyppl.org/Documents/March%202008%20Pistol%20Finals%20%20All%20divisions.htm By Division Results at: http://www.uspsa.org/members/

Next time you're at one of our matches, look around and you'll notice we are in the company of some of the best practical shooters in the U.S. and Canada. One of the things I enjoy most is how encouraging and friendly they are. Very nice folks, carrying guns & slinging lead.

April's match is planned for indoors (so still no jacketed ammo) but I suppose it's possible we could go outside if this Global Warming thing starts working out . . .

A special "shout-out" to WNYPPL member Ryan Dominguez who traveled to Ohio this weekend to take the RO course. Ryan, we appreciate your dedication and enthusiasm!

The Split Club was won by SS King Dave Pribek, $30.00

February's WNYPPL match included three stages with something for everyone: Fast and Furious, Plodding and Precise plus the evil Ms. Virginia visiting as well. Also included were some of the "faux  far away" IPSC targets which didn't draw very many derogatory comments, much to my surprise.
Those fellows listed above did well, some others (myself included), not so much.

By division results at www.uspsa.org

Anyway, one or two matches indoors before you know it, we'll be back outside. In the meantime, bring us your stage ideas, come to a practice, RO, keep score, and have fun.

We had a three new shooters participate who seemed to enjoy themselves. Do you know someone interested in our sport? Bring them along! Thanks to all who participated and helped out and we'll see you in March.

The Split Club was won by John Manzell, $38.00.

The 2008 WNYPPL season got off to a rousing start by asking the question: "Can five seconds seem like a long time?" My answer is . . . Maybe, if there's a timed course of fire and you're planning 12 rounds downrange over that five seconds, or perhaps if your holster lock is on and you spend the first three seconds remembering how to get it undone!

Many of our regulars and a few new faces attended last Sunday with relative newcomers Carmine Perelli and Darren Leskiw making a good showing. Welcome back to the basement, guys! We also had a few interested visitors on Sunday, possible new shooters as well.

Thanks to the many who helped with the match. Those who come early and stay late, who set up, RO, keep score, patch targets and register shooters (Thanks Mike), even those who bring the donuts; THANK YOU ALL!

Don't forget, we're indoors for a few more months, indoor rules apply, no jacketed ammo.

Practices on Thursdays have been fairly busy and we're trying a few new things, a carry gun match, a .22 rifle mini-match and a 2-stage Special Classifier match on February 14th. Do you know someone who's interested in practical shooting? Bring 'em along.

The summer calendar is quickly filling up and there will be plenty of opportunities to get out and shoot. This year's Area 7 will be in Vermont, of course there's the GCL Firecracker the last weekend of June and the Rochester-Brooks 3 Gun in August. Check www.uspsa.org for a complete list. Contact me at wnyppl@wnyppl.org with your match listings or if you have a question or would like to volunteer.

There will be a NROI Level One Class in April being held in Ohio. Contact me if you'd like details or an application!

Michael Bane contacted USPSA recently saying that he would love it if USPSA clubs would make use of his video upload service on DOWN RANGE Television. He encourages clubs to post videos of their matches as other shooting organizations have been doing. For larger matches, it gives sponsors another way to be seen. He would love to see a "library" of USPSA classifiers, so that when a new shooter is getting ready to shoot those stages, they can go to DRTV and see them run (for better and no doubt for worse!) All a person has to do is go to http://www.downrange.tv/player2.htm, then click on UPLOAD YOUR VIDEO HERE! in the upper-right corner of the video window. Then it's a simple matter of following the instructions. Michael says “I think we've only scratched the surface on what clubs can use this service for, we're always open to new ideas. Of course, this is a free, non-exclusive service! We post our own videos on YouTube, too!”

Looking forward to another fun match next month. In the meantime, shoot safe!

Just another day in paradise, fresh air, sunshine, OK, the November match contained three stages not meant to confuse but proved to do just that for some competitors last Sunday. Most if not all seemed to have fun.

Detailed results at www.uspsa.org. Members menu, local match results.

We're off until January 30, 2008, but we'll practice every Thursday on the indoor range until then. Contact Mike Harding for January match slots at wnyppl@gmail.org.

For practice on December 13, we'll have a "fun" concealed carry match. Bring what you carry or would like to carry (no Open guns/No optical sights). All will be scored minor on a quick 3 stage mini-match format. 18 rounds maximum per stage, only two reloads allowed on belt, oh yeah, wear a coat or jacket for concealment. No flashlight will be needed.

Some housekeeping for next year:

WNYPPL Club Dues will remain at $35.00 US. Match fees will be the same as 2007.

The 2008 match invitation is on the home page of this website.

Your 2008 USPSA Rulebook has been mailed and many of your will have it by the time you read this. It's not a page turner, but is a "must-read". Also recommend you read the "changes" summary at: http://www.uspsa.org/rules/2004-2008%20Rules%20Differences.pdf.

We need your assistance in the upcoming year! Please volunteer to RO. It's more fun than it looks, those guys with the guns aren't as scary as they look, and you'll get a break on your match fee ($5.00). If you hesitate because you haven't done this in the past, we'll help you get your feet wet. Contact me at wnyppl@wnyppl.org.

It's been my privilege to work with all of you this year and I'm looking forward to a 2008 with all A's! Best wishes for a happy holiday season, and a prosperous new year.

I know, I know, no more "terrific weather" openings for a while. At least I heard that it was a fun match for our annual return to the TSC bowling lanes. Congratulations to all who scored well and thanks to all who came out to compete.

I'm sorry I missed the match. I was invited to participate in a USPSA "Local Leaders Workshop" in Allentown PA over the weekend. OK, I now believe that they actually want to hear what's going on at the club level. I think you'll see some changes in the methods used to pass information to clubs, members and sections in the future (Probably a year or more out - this was the first of a number of these meetings to be held across the country).
Anyhow, thanks to all who supported our match, and/or worked in various capacities to make it a success!

Terrific weather for our last outdoor match of the year. (That's right - we're moving indoors, more on this below). There was a relatively light attendance but no lack of enthusiasm for three field courses that some shooters conquered while others left just shaking their heads.

A beautiful August Sunday punctuated by the sound of gunfire!

Hot dogs, Handguns & Carbines.

Every once in a while you could even hear the sound of a piece of steel being hit that was not preceded by an expletive being uttered.

The Combined Results table will be included with the “results” email and we are uploading all of the division results and individual stage results to the USPSA website as well as our club website www.wnyppl.org. Use either the Public or Members part of www.uspsa.org & go to Local Match Results. Look in the drop down menu for Western New York Practical Pistol League or enter EL05 in the Club Code box. Our monthly match results will appear just like the major match results on the website.

Feel free to email pictures for our website. You can now send your pictures and/or videos to our webmaster, Brendan Fallon webmaster@wnyppl.org for posting.

August Match Combined Results here: http://wnyppl.org/Documents/August%202007%20Pistol%20Combined%20Results.htm

Thanks to Bob Pugliese for staging our first carbine fun match. Those who stuck around fired at modified versions of three of our pistol stages (no steel). There were some interesting weapons used, from the ever popular Beretta Storm to a vintage M-1 carbine and a full-length Thompson .45 Auto. That is a BIG gun. Lots of smiles were also present. We’ll do it again sometime. Damn, I need that MP-5 after all . . .

Carbine results here (fun match only – no divisions):
http://wnyppl.org/Documents/WNYPPL%20Carbine%20Results%20August%202007.htm

Thanks also to Chef Bob for carrying on the hot dog grilling tradition.

Our last outdoor match for the year will be Sunday September 30. After that, back to the indoor range in October. Please remember that once we move inside, NO jacketed ammo.

Thanks to all who turned out Sunday for our match, including the Rochester crew who arrived via motorcycle and proceeded to shoot up the range at TSC. Combined Results are here at:

http://wnyppl.org/Documents/WNYPPL%20July%202007%20Combined%20Results.htm

"By Division" results are found at www.uspsa.org, local match results. As always, let us know if you have any questions about the results.

Speaking of which, PLEASE remember to review and double check your scoresheets before you sign them after you shoot each stage. Take a moment to review the time recorded as well as the hits & math! Some of the sheets from Sunday’s match required close inspection to determine the actual score. A signed but inaccurate scoresheet can cause an unpleasant outcome in the match results. It’s YOUR responsibility to be sure the scoresheet is correct. (See Rule 9.7 & 9.8).

Next month, we’ll also hold a carbine side match after the pistol competition. Only pistol caliber carbines, straight walled cartridges, under 2000 fps velocity will be allowed. We’ll shoot the paper portion of one or two of the August stages. This will be a “fun” match only.

IMPORTANT: See the Rangemaster and/or an RO before you uncase a long gun. In other words, bring your carbine downrange in a case. DON’T uncase at the usual Safety Area.

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT NOTICE: Famous Chef Bob Pugliese will prepare hot dogs on the grill for all at next month’s match. It’s a summer festival at WNYPPL!

Thanks to all who set-up, RO’d, kept score, taped, set steel, broke down the match and handled registration. Also thanks to all of you shooters!

I’m keeping this short. I need to practice for the hot dog part of the August match!

Shoot Safe.

Before I forget, I want to thank our dedicated members who put our matches on each month. This month especially, Derek Zmozynski who spent about 7 hours on Saturday cleaning, organizing and welding in our container, and John Manzell, who led match set-up with an iron hand. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes and we appreciate it when someone says “that was a fun stage” or “we’ll come and shoot here again”.

Seems like I’m mentioning our summer weather again as it was a perfect day for a match. That combined with four interesting stages and that gosh-darn steel plate wheel thingie, or as I like to think of it, our circular plate rack. (How’s that, Jeff?)

Some of our regulars led our division results but a few newer shooters are making their presence known. Watch for newcomer Sarah Lao to be pushing toward the top of the list in the future.

Remember that the Combined Results table will be included with this email and we are uploading all of the division results and individual stage results to the USPSA website and our new club website.
